in Interesting Photo Subject, On the Road

Rangefinder Magazine is a great magazine for professional photographers. And it’s a great magazine whether your into photography or not. I was fortunate to get a recent cover. It happened to be one of my favorite subjects, Catarino Romero. Catarino’s a 100 year old rancher from Texas. It’s great that they honored a 100 year old man who works hard EVERY day. How can you not take a great portrait of a beautiful face like that. Anyone could do it!

I remember going to Catarino’s farm to do the shoot. When I arrived, I was welcomed by his ENTIRE family. Had to be 60 people. What a family.! I’m convinced that farmers and ranchers live a long life. 100 years old is nothing in that world. Must be the hard work, and being outside. The Romero family was thrilled when they saw the cover. Not a bad way to turn 100!  Of all the covers I’ve been lucky enough to have featured on, this is absolutely one of my favorites. It’s simple, powerful, and very graphic. And it’s all about the image. I tell aspiring photographers all the time…focus on the image, not the equipment and the technical stuff. The image is always MOST important. Check out the Rangefinder cover here.

Paul – that is a tremendous shot! Congratulations on making the Rangefinder cover. I am curious about how much processing you might have done to that image – is it HDR?

Thanks Michael. I use several custom settings on my camera to “boost” the color. Similar to shooting Velvia film, back in the day. I try to keep the post production to a minimum. No sense retouching a great face like that.
The vibrant blue in his eyes is part to do with his cataracts, which tend to reflect the light in unusual ways.
