What’s really the best picture?

Ranch Family from Wyoming

If there’s anything I’ve learned over the course of my career, it’s “always try to find the picture in-between”. You’re probably wondering “what is he talking about?”. What I’m talking about is the picture that most people overlook, might very well be the BEST photograph. Over the years I’ve spoke to groups, students, professionals and countless amateur photographers. I constantly remind them to LOOK for the picture in-between, the captured moment, the un-obvious. It’s essentially training yourself to see the world in a different way. Case in point…….Here’s a photo I took in Wyoming. When I arrived for the shoot the obvious picture was the beautiful family holding hands looking into the camera with the beautiful big sky of Wyoming. Right? Maybe. That photo was nice, however, when I turned around to change lenses I noticed the family as you see them here. Years ago, I would have hollered at the family and told them to turn around so I could keep shooting. And sadly,  I would have missed this amazing moment. Fortunately, I had the intuition to keep my mouth shut and quietly shoot as fast as I could. As soon as the family noticed I had returned, the moment was gone, and they turned around. Same thing with the farmer pictured below. I asked him to wait for me in his barn while I got the camera from my car. When I turned the corner as saw him gazing, I started shooting right away. These are CAPTURED MOMENTS. Sometimes the best photographs hands down.

Like you taught me Paul, ya gotta keep shooting. Paul is a master at painting with light, as you can see from the “farmer from Nebraska.” What you don’t know (yet) are the stories behind these great shots. Paul, you need to do a PODCAST on this! Every time I see that farmer I think of the story around him and what he said to you, haha.

Paul
Thank you for your amazing work on “American Farmer”. I am a rancher from Canada but you have captured who we are and why we love what we do. I just hope that someday soon the people of North America will realize the value of our work and the value of the quality food we so diligently produce for them. Now you need to come North and picture us Canadians. Thank you for helping us tell our side of the story.
