I get asked all the time “what’s the best way to photograph kids?”. We’ll I’m not perfect, nobody is, but my best advice is to keep the pictures honest. Meaning, no cheesy smiles, no silly props, and no forced poses. Just let the children be! Watch and observe them before you take a single picture. If there’s a certain mannerism they have, try to bring it out in your photo. Find a simple background. You’re taking a picture of your child, not the background. Another great tip…..get down low. Shoot on their level. Kids often look terrible when shot from above. They look much more powerful and interesting when you get down with them, or even lower. Also, be sensitive to the light. Every parent I know points the camera straight on, and shoots with the flash. You ever wonder why all your kid pictures look the same? This might be the reason. Turn the flash off, and have fun. Play around with your child and see what happens. Bring in the dog, cat or whatever makes them happy. Keep the camera ready at all times. You never know when that magical moment may come along. When you get that spectacular picture, you’ll cherish it forever! Here’s a few examples…..
